How can I Compost?

Composting Steps!

STEP 1: OUTREACH

We go out in the community to check interest in composting and we let them know the importance of diverting food from the landfill.

STEP 2: COLLECT FOOD SCRAPS

Fill your bucket with food scraps (food you do not intend to eat see list of food we compost).

STEP 3: COLLECT DATA

Weigh the food scraps. This helps us keep record of how much we are diverting from landfills.

STEP 4: PROCESS FOOD SCRAPS

Dump the scraps into an area for processing. Chop scraps to break them down to compost faster. Many hands make light work!

STEP 5: ADD BROWNS

Add Browns to neutralize any odor from the food scraps.  Browns need to be added whether you store the food scraps in a tumbler or after you chop up the food scraps.

STEP 6: FINISH COMPOST

Once the food scraps breakdown, the finished product is usually a deep brown soil sometimes referred to as BLACK GOLD This Black Gold will not have any identifiable food left.

STEP 7: USE IT / GIVE AWAY

The Black Gold you created can be used in a garden bed or anywhere you want to grow a plant or food. If you do not have a garden bed give it away to someone who does!

STEP 8: REPEAT

Repeat these steps and keep food out of landfills!!
